Richmond, Virginia, one of the oldest cities in America, was founded in 1737. Richmond is the 3rd and current Capitol of Virginia. Thomas Jefferson and Charles-Louis Clerisseau designed the capitol building together, and construction ran from 1785-1788. Free one-hour guided tours of the capitol building can be taken by the public Monday-Saturday for both walk-ins and appointments. The city offers much to explore by way of nature, museums, historical landmarks and much more. The Poe Museum, Virginia Museum of History & Culture and the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts are all located in Richmond! The 82-acre Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens is located just outside of the city with over a dozen themed gardens, a community garden and a conservatory to enjoy. Belle Isle is a small 54 acre island in downtown Richmond that is open to the public from sunrise to sunset. The Island has a granite rock climbing wall, biking trails, historical sites and a gorgeous view of the city's skyline.
