Mobile is Alabama's oldest city and first became inhabited by the French in 1702, serving as an important trading port and as the state of Louisiana's capital. In 1703 Mobile held the first Mardi Gras celebration in the United States thanks to Frenchman Nicholas Langlois, a celebration that continues year after year to this day. In 1814 Mobile was declared a town and was officially named a city by 1819 when it became a part of the state of Alabama. There is plenty of enjoyment to be found in this coastal city with its many museums and attractions, an array of delectably fresh seafood restaurants, beautiful parks and gardens.
